Well, all I can say is that I had a blast on my adventure to the west side of Michigan. In pursuit of chromage, as we were looking to hook some skams on the fly rod. Well, we arrived early Saturday morning, at 12:00am. We decided to hit the pier and do some flyfishing before it got crowded. We met a few gentlemen that helped us get set up for drifting with a float on our spinning rods as well. They managed to use their cast nets to get us some alewives. At 3:00am I heard my friends rod screaming, and I looked it was bent. He ran over quickly and set the hook. Hail to the leaper, the fish jumped out of the water and almost onto the pier. After a good fight he had a 18lb skam under his belt. Action picked up and by 7am we had hooked 5 and landed 3. We wanted to get some on flies, and they just weren't taking them. We ran over to the St. Joe, and another trib looking for fish. The river was pee warm, about 80deg although the trib poured cold. We searched the beaches, but found nothing. After a short nap, we headed back to the pier. We figured we would drift alewives again, and glad we did. My friend had a two hookups in 45minutes, and landed two nice steelhead making me anxious. As I sat and talked to him, I heard my reel screaming and looked over, a skam had inhaled my bait and ripped my rod out of the holder and I almost lost it. Luckily I grabbed it and hooked the fish. After a good fight I had a 7lb chromer in my hands. We stayed out(this was around 7:30pm) and my friend landed another one, while I lost one to a bad hookset. Around 8:30pm both of our floats went down, and we thought we had a double header. After we saw the fish jump, we realized that it was a "pig" that ate both of our baits and we both had hooked it. Eventually my friend had broke off when it surged into the deeper water, and I still had it on. Alot of thrashing was done, and it lasted until the end, after it jumped out of the net two times, we finally got it in. The fish was around 10lbs, and all chrome. We called it a day and walked of the pier with fish in our hands!
Well, hail to the leaper......what a great day and a great time!
Pursuing surfs up chromage is life! :D
Yep, been there done that when I lived in South Bend Indiana for 7 years. I heard they have been in the last 2 weeks, but not many in the rivers. Still 80 degree temps s in The Joe like when I was there 3 weeks ago. Probably have to wait for them to come in with the salmon then in late august unless we get a weather break.
Fly fishing from those piers is a problem never really seen any one doing it when the run is really on and all of the bait and lure throwers are there. We need a fly fishing only section on the piers (yeah right that will go over real well !).
Wish I could have given you some of my new glow in the dark smelt streamers I have yet to field test.
Anybody get spooled on the pier ? That happened to me once with a big king. There was nothing that was going to stop that fish.
Oh well, come mid august and the kings will be coming and the summer run steelies. Then we go all the way to next May with Steelhead in the rivers.
"Great Lakes Great Times"
The Great Lakes, an all year fishery for salmonoids at its finest!
No one got spooled, but my friend almost did. They are maniacs for sure!:D
I bet it was crowded, right or wrong ?
Some nice jumps ehhh..
Very crowded, we were out at the pier at 12:00am since we heard it was going to be jammed pack. Alot of jumping!
Yep, what I thought, brings back memories of all nighters on the piers in search of steelies and kings. Don't think I could do that now at my age (54). We had some great laughs and nights out there though.
Flyfishing on the pier in St Joe
I fished from 2 am to 7 am on Tuesday this week.
no one was in the pier (southside of the St Joe).
I fished the lakeside of the pier, with 3 inch Closser's white and silver.
Day total... 4 landed fish
8 broken off (7 lb tippet, I forgot 12lb)
1 broken seven wt rod
1 8lb drum on 3wt elk hare caddis
The water started to get warm and the fish headed deep, but when the temp drop again you will see me in St Joe
Awesome, yes it works when you hit it when they are there in mass schooling to run the river.
It can be done.
Got to try my new glow in the dark smelt streamers soon !!
Congratulations ! :smokin: :smokin:
greed is not always good
Dan I am not new to this sight but this is the first time I have chosen to reply to one of the posts. I normally regard you highly for your success as you are probably one of the few people who catch as many as I do however this email is just not good for business in the skamania world. This new resource is precious and any one who fishes skamania knows that you cant release them very successfully 8 out of 10 releases die. So why are you telling these people that it is ok to catch 8 or 9 fish in one day when a limit for one person is 3 that means you killed at least 5 other fish neadlessly. Please dont be offended I just want to educate newcomers properly to protect the resource. Thanks for listening
