Bass flies

Hi All
The warm weather has hit Southern Ontario (big time), for the next month or two I'll be fishing river Smallies. I have lots of top water flies, poppers etc. I was just wondering what are good sub-suface flies, I have some buggers ty'd up as well as Clousers. Does anyone have other patterns that work on Smallies? Also what color buggers and Clousers do you recommend?
Thanks Rick

Rick.

Hex wiggler patterns should work, one of my own favorite small mouth patterns proven on east and mid west smallie streams is a simple black marabou streamer with a peacock herl body, never forget muddler minnows also.

It's tough to go wrong with anything that has a rabbit strip incorporated in the pattern. Also, in addition to what Hal has mentioned, stone fly nymphs and some small deceivers and whistlers (that's right, Dan Balton's salt water pattern) can be very productive.

Good luck. Smallies on a fly rock. :)

Muddler Minnows

I use muddlers in several sizes. Also do veriations on the muddler. I use a spun deer head with a combination of crystal chenele body and marabou tail with some crystal flash in the tail. This has been killer on smallies....... Also the other bugs that are mentioned above do work!:)

Smallies

Hi
Fished the lower Grand, last evening. Thanks for the advise. My brother-in-law and I managed to get about 20-odd smallies up to 2lbs. nice river fish, I used mostly Clousers, in Brown and white with a little krystal flash (orange)
Thanks for your help and suggestions
Rick
