Steelhead Dreams

IMHO the best book on Great Lakes steelheading to date. I have all the others which are few, this provides a great overview of this immense fishery in the U.S. great lakes states and canada and compares it to the PNW steelhead fisheries. I do not think any one could exhaust the 7 X 24 steelhead fly fishing opportunities there are in the great lakes in ones life time.

Matt Supinski also writes for Fly Fish America and wrote the Pere Marquette River Journal for F. Amato Publications. He is a resort and fly fishing guide located in Michigan.

It comes in hard and soft covers.

Hal, looks like a very good book but ..
at $39.00 I'll borrow your copy.

Thats for the hard cover, soft cover is $ 25 to $ 30 max. I have the soft cover, if for nothing else you can use the color fly plates and dressing instructions for our great lakes flies. Many of the patterns I have sent you are listed.

P.S. For a gentlemen with such an investment in fly tackle a $ 30 investment for increased knowledge seems so trivial. Lot of good technical steelhead information in this book you can apply on the Rouge I think. Some new little piece of information may help in your steelhead pursuits.

Steelhead (wet) Dreams
There way well be a lot of good stuff in Matt Supinski's book but I have big problem and therefore question the credibility of one who would attach a slinky to running line. sling it from a two handed rod and call it flyfishing.

Other than that, what is happening in the Detroit area right now? And what rivers are fishable with a Spey rod, sans slinky?

Rouge???? Hal, isn't that "red" in French :>)
Actually you may be right; lots of the goodies you've sent me look very 'workable' for the "Rogue." :D

Will go back to the site and re-read the info.

I was rereading a section of the book last night, thought I knew everything well Mr. Supinski has raised my steelhead IQ even further now. Hope that translates into more future encounters.:smokin: :smokin: , not necessarily landings though:mad:

yeah but....
Yeah, but what is flyfishing? Some say it is truly casting upstream with a dry fly on a silk line and just getting the trout to come up and grab the fly!

Well, in my opinion....if you are using patterns imitating the forage and using a fly rod and reel it is flyfishing. So weight attached to your line, well what is spiltshot, or beadheads, or brass tube flies?

It's all about what you feel is flyfishing. I am good friends with Matt, and we talk all the time, actually I talked to him before I wrote this post...and I know he is a steelhead enthusiast and he knows what he is talking about. He has fished them since his early teens and his knowledge is incredible. I am happy I know him personally and can fish with him when he has days off.
