1st trout of the year
I took a break today from chasing pike to go and try to catch my first trout of the year. The Salmon River in central CT was quite crowded, but it was yielding fish to those who were patient and in the right places. I caught one brown about 15" and had an LDR on another of about the same size. Both took a black caddis pupa drifted just off the bottom. Ahhh......I feel better.
Dealing with crowds isn't for everyone. This river has one of a handful of Trout Management Areas that remain open year round, so the fishing pressure should be more evenly displaced after the 3rd Saturday of April when other rivers open. I am usually not a big fan of fishing a run with somebody standing 15 ft downstream of me and throwing upstream into the area that I'm already nymphing, but the atmosphere today seemed to be relaxed. It was the start of a long weekend, the fish were biting, and the weather was beautiful. And when I started to feel a little claustrophobic, I simply left and went back to one of my pike haunts (no fish, 2 LDRs).
It's now official in my mind......first trout of the year = spring!
