Reality Test!
Been a long time since I've used bait casting rods for steelhead or Salmon so don't pay much attention to the cost of rods or reels. Muching a quick lunch and opened up the new Spring Cabela's catalog and about choked!

They're listing Shimano spinning reels for as high as $460!!!! and level winds as high as $350. What the heck (descriptions not withstanding) could you put in either one of those types of reels that would get them to price out at that level? No need to answer; someone out there must be willing to pay or they wouldn't list them.

Ryan, ignoring the fact that there is no such
thing as too high a profit margin, the # of 'evil faces' suggests something here. Don't explain it to me.:eyecrazy:

What could you do to a fly reel that makes them go for $600-$800. It`s the same old story, people like to brag about how much they can pay for equip.

"Slinger" I think ..
you've just about got that right. Braging rights is about all that seperate the 'ultra boy toys.'

Profit margin goes to Shimano, not the retailers. When we sell a Shimano Stella ($500) spinning reel we make about $50.

  Has to do with you probally do not want to know how much I spend on my egg slinging rod and reels.

There is a limit to the high end market though. Van Stahl went bankrupt pursuing the high end spinning market.

Damn spinning elitists!
