New guy with a question
Hi... new here!
I have been taking the fly tying lessons at LLBean and having fun with it but, never got around to buying a kit. Well over the weekend I scored an entire kit from a CL listing for $30. All the basic tools, lots of materials, all in a big 4 drawer Plano box.
Problem is when I got it home, I noticed a musty smell. In brighter light, I could see many of the bags the materials are in had mold on and some in them. I immediately rebagged everything and cleaned out the box.
The furs and feathers look clean and in great shape.
My question is... Is there a way to kill the mold on the skins? Its not really bad, but enough to still carry an odor.
Salt and Borax
Salt and Borax are used to dry out various skins, might work for the mold, as well.
Wash all the suspect materials in a mild solution of shampoo. Hang or layout on newspaper to dry. The materials will smell better, be softer to use, and be shinier. (No kidding!) If you use a bucket or laundry tub for the washing you will be surprised at the amount of grit and oil you will remove. Once when washing a pheasant skin I ended up with about a tablespoon of sand.
Members at the club to which I belong even follow up with conditioner on the squirrel tails - it is hair after all.
