Huge Mayfly

This mayfly was perched on the outside of our window. I've never seen one this large. The total length is about 3", including the tails, and the body is just over an inch long. Anyone know which type it is?

Looks like a hexagenia spinner.

Tie on a size 8 or 6 "Coffin Fly" and see some spectaculiar surface takes!

Thanks for the ID guys -- I've heard and read about hex hatches and can only imagine what it must be like to have thousands of these things fluttering around. What a feast for the fish!

I looked up "mayfly" on wikipedia and it mentions that Lake Erie had an emergence of one species of hexagenia that was so massive it showed up on the doppler weather radar!

Looks like a male Hex Spinner. You must live near some swamps as they like the muck. Here are a couple pics of a Male and Female I found in Michigan two weeks ago. Tough hatch, basically comes off at nighth 9-11pm something to see or at least hear

Nice pics! I took several shots using different settings but it was tough to get a good photo through the window screen. The camera kept trying to focus on the screen. There are a few swampy areas and a couple small ponds nearby so maybe that's where this guy hatched. He was on the window at 11:00am -- guess he was out late the night before!
