Weekend trip to the Cape

My father (Paxton) and I went to the Cape yesterday. I landed 3 fish. The first was covered with sea lice and was in the 18-20" range. The other 2 were covered with tartar sauce and cheese...mmmmmm:chuckle:

Fished a couple of early season upper Cape areas and only took a handful of fish all weekend between 4 of us. They're around but certainly not in any numbers from what I could tell and gather from talking to folks. Seems a bit late this year.

I've been scouting around Chatham / Harwich / Breswter without gear in hand. A few shorts, some new being caught. Shimmering hordes yet to be seen, but their arrival is imminent. Freshwater action is hot right now on the kettle ponds. Herring ascending, a slug of stocker trout in Stony Brook this year (?)

I'm betting there will be a marked improvement in SW by next weekend with the following weekend rewarding jackpots here and there for those who search; no two tides being the same unless by coincidence in the same spot and people getting skunked the next beach over from other's hitting paydirt on quickly moving fish.

To kill time I poke around Dowses annually toward the end of the month looking for the big squid and early slammer blues (some in the teens and thick as a bus). The locals know all about this May fishery. Lewis Bay line fishermen are finding really big bass on these same squid at that time. Also chat with the guys who run weirs on the sound and get very good intel as to what's crossing the shoals.

Then all hell breaks loose :)
