shooting line off the wrong side

Hey people
this question will inevitably let the world know what a crappie caster I am:

ʹm having some trouble shooting line from time to time. I seem to be doing something when I shoot line thats making the line wrap around behind the reel or over the rod and coming out from the "wrong side" of the rod.

This wraping thing is creating unnecesary friction when shooting the line or when retrieving it back with hand or reel.
Even though its easily corrected, if it were up to me Id rather not do it...

any tips for avoiding this nasty tic?

Make a o-ring with the thumb and finger on the line hand when shooting and use it like a big spinning guide until the last of the line is coming then open it up
