...and then came the rain!!!

So here I sit in front of my computer when I should be enjoying a dinner in Forks. But topic title describes it all...

I fished the 'Duc' yesterday, as it was the only one fishable. Today nothing was fishable. Drove around to the Hoko and explored up there for a little a bit. Brown she ran. And what horrible logging practices I noticed in the watershed. :(

Anyways so I am heading back later this week, as the rivers should be prime and bunches of new fish should have arrived. :)

Great to hear from you from all the way out in Forks. Boy I miss sittin' in Shoprite chowing down a corned beef hash omelet and home fries at o-dark thirty before a day of hardcore winter steelheading. They get a little toast on the butter there as I recall. The Thriftway down the street serves Seattle Best Coffee so an Americano was not out of the question either, all the way out in rainforest country.

Syd Glasso's humble homewaters...

Shirley's Corner at Olympic Mountains Bike Shop, 70 West A Street, has Torrefazion coffee - makes Forks seem luxurious :)

I will be forever indebted to anyone who could get me a copy of that photo of a vibrant young Chittendon girl (Hiram's daughter I think) standing with her frilly pants rolled up on a smooth Elwha River boulder holding an ancient flyrod in her left arm and a yard long chromer summer run with her right arm - fire in her eyes and a proud smirk that could make any school boy envious.

I last saw it hanging in the lobby of the Olympic Suites Motel in Forks. I am not above bribery! http://www.flyfishingforum.com/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif

That photo was also published in Wild Steelhead and Salmon a couple years back.

NorthFk -

Thanks for the tip, I remember someone telling me that before so if it was you sorry I forgot. In order to gain permission to reproduce the image I might need to contact state or federal agencies, as I am sure WSAS did. Perhaps they would be good enough to share that contact info with me.

I've been talking to John Greenwood, director of the anadromous atlantic salmon program in the State of New Hampshire about some really old photos of the upper Merrimac River and it's tributaries like the Pemigewasset R. The river has since been dammed and the run extinct, but recent efforts to restore runs in the river have met with some limited success. There was a controversy by spirited anglers like those in the WSC who fought for protection of spawning headwaters as far back as the turn of the last century. The area has had a long history of salmon battles and of course the salmon lost. Yet the history is inspiring as is John's passion to restore them in the river. Those old photos chronicle the pre-industrial days when there was a run to save, not re-plant. I hope to gain permission to post some of those images along with that rich history from the 1800's thru today.

I love old photographs. I love Ralph Wahl's work. Absolutely amazing!!

My high school libary had a copy of Come Wade the River, the only copy I have ever seen. Oh how close I came to 'losing' that book.
