Grand in May

Thinking about heading to Grand Bahama for a long weekend in May with the little lady. Planning on staying in a regular resort and using guides for two days.

Anybody have any recommendations of both guides and resorts? (Trying to avoid staying at a lodge for this one)

Thanks,
Dave

Westin at Our Lucaya....Capt. Phil & Mel for a great weekend

I believe the Westin has at least 5 pools...Phil will pick you up at the door...Just make sure you bring along a soft cooler of drinks and a sandwich or two.. The convenience stores on the East end leave a bit to be desired.

Hi Dave
Just back from Abaco this morning . . . I've fished GB many times. Stay at Pelican Bay, s.o. will love it. They have their own guides, but see if you can get a couple of days with the Pinder brothers. Try to get Jeffrey or David, Jr. They always have their sports stay at Lighthouse Point (part of Our Lucaya) which would be fine. PB is smaller (and right next door) and my wife and I prefer it. try grandbahamabonefishing
I'll post some pics from Abaco soon.
Best,
Bill

guides

All of the suggestions are good ones - My personal favorite would be:

East End: Captain Perry Demeriite out of the McCleans Town. He will pick you up at the hotel drive you to the dock (45 - 60 minutes) away. And work his rump off for you. He currently fishes out of a 17 foot maverick, and has what I would consider to be top 10% guiding skills (compares favorably with the Middle Bight guides in Andros). Have sent many his way - and none have complained. He is also comfortable with both expert and novice casters and has the ability to effectively coach so those making the transition to SW have a great experience.

If you want to fish the West end - Tommy or Carl Rolle are both excellent inpendent guides as well 242-559 2956

In the Our Lucaya complex - The Westin is my favorite. The grounds are incredible and great food (and also cheap food) is within walking distance.

Thanks for all the info guys. Unfortunately GB didn't work out for our travel plans.

We are going to fly to Miami instead. We arrive 5/25 visiting friends in the city that night. In the morning we are going to drive down to the keys. Flights are booked but nothing else.

Do you guys have any recommendations on guides and upscale places to stay? It's somewhat short notice but any help would be appreciated.

We would like to be pretty far south. I'm a keys virgin but I'm thinking between Key West and Islamorada.

Thanks again,
Dave

Hey Dave, if you are open to other possibilities I'd recommend you look into renting a condo or townhouse. I rent a townhouse in Key West and it's comparable in price to a hotel but it's so much better - private pool, kitchen, 3 BR 3 Bath, etc. There are a number of places that list residences for rent and personally I like them better than hotel rooms.

As far as guides, you will have a tough time getting a top guide for that time frame unless one gets a cancellation. All the established guides are pretty much booked from the beginning of May through June. If you are going to Key West I'd recommend looking up the Saltwater Angler - they have relationships with a number of guides and can hook you up with a less established guide.

Check on the Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada and see if they have any openings. It's a great place to spend the weekend. World Wide Sportsman is right across the street and they have lots of guides or check with Sandy Moret at Florida Keys Outfitters to see if he can set you up with a guide.
If you just want to see Key West you can drive down for the day from Islamorada.

Keys Help

Dave...Met you in Acklins...

Cheeca is the best place in the middle keys. Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada is a great shot. They can set you up with a great guide. I fished with John "Mitch: Milchman after a completed the saltwater school run by Sandy Moret from Florida Keys...They are a class act.

Make sure to grab a bite at Morada Bay. One of my faves. My wife continues to ask when are we going back to Cheeca. Too bad I am stuck in AZ.
