new to fly fishing/line help

I recently purchased a used Ross Colorado 3 reel off of Ebay, it's in great condition and has scientific mastery line on it (or the seller told me so). I am somewhat confused with the end of the line, however. What is the loop at the end and if it breaks how do you fix it/replace it? It almost looks like mesh and is held on with a red rubber sleeve. I have tried the 3m website, but no luck. Could someone help out a rookie wanting to learn.

The loop at the end of the flyline is to make switching leaders easier. If you tie a perfection or double surgeon's loop at the butt end of your leader, you can simply connect it to the flyline with a loop to loop connection. If the braided loop ever comes loose or off, you can replace it or simply attach the butt material of your leader with a nail knot.

so the mesh goes over the line and then the red band (almost looks like electrical tape) keeps it on? and if it needs to be replaced where do i look online to find it? thanks for responding, was a little lost. i have seen fly line before but not this.

The mesh and red band are one piece. They're usually attached by heat shrinking them on (maybe with a little adhesive too). They're not necessary to attach the leader to the fly line, in fact I think far more people DON'T use them than DO. It's very unlikely that loop will break unless it gets cut somehow. Your knots are going to break much sooner.

If you find that you don't like it for some reason, you can carefully cut it off with a razor blade. If you can't cut it off, you can cut off that short portion of the fly line (which shouldn't affect the line's characteristics a noticeable amount).
