Tying Temple Dog Style Tube Flies

1 Attachment(s)
Lately there has been a great interest in tube flies and how to tie them, especially some of the European style flies such as the Temple Dog. Therefore I thought I would give some basic instructions on tying the temple dog as they were taught to me by some of my friends in Denmark & Finland. They are not difficult to tie as you will see.

I am not going to step through tying the body on this fly because I figured most of you have tied bodies on flies before and doing it on a tube is no more difficult than doing it on a hook. So this is what I will start with. The fly is the Orange and Green Temple Dog and the pattern is as follows.

Tip: Oval Silver Tinsel
Tag: Florescent Yellow Antron
Tail: Florescent Yellow Antron
Body: First 1/2 Green holographic Tinsel; second Black seal fur or sub.
Body Hackle: Silver Badger
Rib: Oval Silver Tinsel
Hackle: Black Cock Hackle
Wing: Orange Fox or Tempeldog Hair, red and pearl flash, 3 to 5 peacock herls, and Black Fox or Tempeldog Hair on top.
Hackle: Black cock hackle
Cheeks: Jungle cock
Head: Black thread

Next tie in a stiff silver badger hackle directly in front of the body.

This will help to support and stand up the wing in the characteristic high style of the templedog.

Next, tie in a small bunch of orange fox or templedog hair.

Note to tier; when tying in the wing make each successive application of the winging material slightly longer than the last. This will give the wing of the fly its characteristic teardrop shape.

Tying Temple Dog Style Tube Flies

Hi Charlie.
Nice job on the tubes.
If you would like to learn more about tubes and their materials drop me an e-mail at nhoulding@rogers.com and I will get you in touch with my friend Toni K from Finland.
He has been tying tubes for a number of years now and because he is one of the Guideline reps he has the opportunity to tie with Hakan Norling. The original Templedog man.

Nice and nasty! Would bring out the beast in a salar submarine for sure, thanks for the great sequence and photography.

(I think I will try a few of these on my spring steelhead trip out west as well)

Thanks guys,

Neal, I just may take you up on that offer. I think my TD's are passable but there is great room for improvement.

Juro, we need to develop some color combinations for steelhead fishing for the Templedog's.

this is my attempt at making a big lake erie trib version. i did the two hackles at the front insted of the palmer on the first. i will have to try one the other way as well. actic fox for both wings and bodi-works flat holo braid for the body. let's see some more versions.

Nice work, both of them.

Can I ask a completely ignorant kinda question. What exacly is Temple Dog? I've only seen one flavor and that was a natural black with light tips, tons of movement. But the orange in Charlies' Temple Dog looks more like fox.

If you can reveal your source send me a PM. I'm interested in making some more. I have a Mega-Picasse in mind with an Ostrich "Spey" hackle and a serious "get-down" cone head. Need some seriously long black hair for that one. Should be fun.

hey Chris-
the original was just that, dog hair. Charlie may have a source for authentic stuff. if you can't get any look for long arctic fox tail or if you want really long try the icelandic sheep which you can usualy get up to about 6" length. wapsi markets sheep under the name streamer hair.
