Has anyone been to the Deerfield recently? Going *someplace* on Saturday...trying to decide between the Deerfield, Farmington or the Swift....
I can't give you any info on the Deerfield, but Wednesday on the Swift below Quabin I caught nothing on several hits. Typical water levels, temperatures, etc.
I also tried a tributary of the Quabbin It was at a low flow level, with temps in the high sixties, measured by wet wading and possibly highly inaccurate. There are a good number of brookis in the river that are hungry and don't see many flies at this time of year. I got a lot of practice at LDR's and some to hand on a red quill. The basic method was to find water 1.5 feet or deeper and then fish it. If your interested e-mail me and I'll give you the locale
One other item that I got on my travels came from the shopkeeper at Flaggs fly shop in Orange, MA. This year may be a good fall for the Millers river. The normal # of fish went in in the spring, but he didn't think many have come out due to high waters in the spring. Dawn and dusk supposedly have been producing there.
Good luck, I wish I were going fishing on saturday rather than digging post holes for a fence.
It sucks. They have totally given it to the rafters and kayakers. They flood the river (increase flows 5X) and it pushes the fish down river then the cut the water off and stran them. It is still a beauty and the fishing is OK but it isn't what it was 2 years ago. I would try the Housy in CT or the Millers locally.
