The Far Side...of Fish

Good evening,
Reuters is reporting that a 646.2 pound Mekong River Catfish was netted in Thailand. This is now the largest freshwater fish officaly recorded in the world!
Dr Zeb Hogan, a World Wildlife Fund Conservation Science Fellow has now "Confirmed that this Catfish is the current record holder".
The Mekong River Catfish is Southeast Asia's largest and rarest freshwater fish. The National Geographic Society is involved in a project studying this species.
Conservationists wanted to release the fish so it could continue to spawn, but it had been eaten by a local village

What did you catch today?

The last line of your post is a little misleading. It died after all of the weighing and other attention it got, then was eaten so it wouldn't go to waste. Sad nonetheless... :(

Yeah.....

TJ,
I think the Conservationists were a day late/dollar short on this. First and foremost, this would be a food item to the locals. The fact that it got weighed at all I think is due to the research that was being done in the area, otherwise we may never have heard of this record.
Some diging found a recent article on a Cambodian website that said Giant Catfish were released into the Mekong River to try to boost species numbers which are thought to be on the edge of extinction. The once bountifull fish that has been persued in this area of Aisa for thousands of years, recently has become the victim of the same plight as many other species worldwide, ie, Dams, Polution, River navigation issues and Overfishing.
This release is under the watchfull eye of the World Wildlife Fund and country director Seng Teak. The release of 4 catfish happend last month (June/05) The Catfish were raise in captivity and taged to warn fisherman to release them should they get caught.

Another

Good evening,
AP is reporting another Giant Catfish landed, this one from the River Ebro near Barcelona Spain. At 7'7" and weighing 212 lbs, this female was the largest freshwater fish caught by a British angler and almost draged him into the river as he fought her. After being weighed and measured, the Catfish was released.
