What do you keep in your vest?
I figured this would be a fun post for my first one. What do you all keep in your vests? Heres what I have

Wet fly box
Dry fly box
Extra Backing
Cooking kit (garlic, lemon pepper, salt, tin foil)
Plastic Bags for fish
Fishing license
Tippet (4x)
water and snacks

thats pretty much it

i just ordered a net and some sinket so those'll be added

what do all you guys have?

Stringer? Cooking kit?!
Is it the official Jimmy Houston autographed fishing vest with the built in fold out fillet board and custom fitted power bait reservoirs? :chuckle:

Sorry bout that, couln't resist.

Actually, I think I may have to add pepper spray or even a smith and wesson incorporated holster to mine now. Went out yesterday to do a bit of casting and check out Simon Gawesworth's casting class on the American river in Sacramento. I sent the wife and dog off on a little walk along the bike trail while I played. Next thing I know there are cops and rangers all over the place, even a sheriffs helicopter circling overhead. Seems the wife walked right by some wacko running around naked showing himself to a bunch of ladies in the park. Flying cops chasing naked guy through the park, pretty funny. And I've been trying to convince her that we should buy a place right on the river. So much for that! The park ranger suggested pepper spray, I think a shot of that at his exposed parts would have ended his naked mood.

But I digress.

If you live in a metropolitan area such as I you might add pepper spray to you vest, but I usually only carry what I think I might need for the day in my vest, when I wear it, because I just don't like to have a full load on. This usually leaves me without something I need that is surely sitting on the kitchen table at home. Like my Jimmy Houston signature filet-o-matic :whoa:

Candy Bars.....and some fish'n stuff! :)

but seriously....I like to go as light as possible.....usually just stuff what is needed in my wading jacket or wader pocket. A flybox, a leatherman, some tippet....and I'm good to go!

I'm very minimalist. On every trip, there's 4 things in it:
Fishing license

Depending on what I'm fishing for these may also be in it:
Extra spool
Dry fly box

That's it for me...

Over the years the darn vest got heavier and HEAVIER.

Old sports injuries are catching up, :( so I like to keep only
  • a few fly boxes (5-6),
  • smokes,
  • fire,
  • survival pack,
  • bug dope,
  • net,
  • 3-4 spools of tippet material
  • flashlight
  • nippers
  • hemostats
  • whistle
  • leader straightener
  • line cleaner/slick
  • 2nd spool of line
  • Musclin and sink

The rest goes into the kit bag, reels, spools, snacks, extra smokes, 8 more boxes flies, rain coat(s), spools for making leaders, ...

One fly box
Priest (if i'm going to be taking any fish)

Keep it simple (and light)

- 2 fly boxes

- nipper and forceps clipped to waders

- 3 spools of tippet

- knife

- S&W .44 magnum pistol, loaded

- split shots, size BB and AB

- digital camera

Backpack full of beer. Oh yeah, I don't wear a vest, as everything fits into the pockets on my waders and jacket.

In my vest i keep...

-2 fly boxes
-leaders and tippets
-strike indicators(never been used)
-split shot
-fly floatant

Thats pretty much it thats all I've ever needed.

Isgrigg 05-17-2005 11:54 PM

Only for trout season ...

7-9 fly boxes (steamers/ drys / wets)
6 spools of tippet different weights
split shot different weights
fly float
first aid kit
fly line dressing
bug dope/sun block
clip on flash light
rain gear

The thing weights a ton ... my brother laughs everytime he picks it up. He says I better not fall in or I will drown.

I have been changing over to a more minimal way of fishing for steehhead and salmon .. clipers, hemos, couple boxes of flies, couple leaders and some tippet material .. stick it all in the pockets of my jacket.

Oh ... I always carry a camera too ... Catch ... Click ... Release

One more thing

Rather than add more things, here is one you should consider: I take a tiny notepad and pen inside a ziplock bag to write down stuff I may want to remember later, such as what I forgot to take along.

One of those Tye Rite pens is one of my most used tools.

As little as possible.

Leader material

usually 1 box of flys

Swiss army knife
