Sparkle and Orange Soft Hackle
1 Attachment(s)
Well spring is a little over two weeks away so here's the soft hackle I'vebeen tinkering with. I found some translucent pearl tinsel that I thought would look great in a sparkle soft hackle.

thread- orange 8/0
body- orange floss covered in small pearl tinsel
rib- copper wire
thorax- light cahill dubbing blended with orange highlight dubbing and a gold bead
hackle- rooster ringneck pheasant

I've caught my share of summer steelhead on a fly very much like that in #2 on a TMC 200R bronze fished greased line. Nice tie.

Nice fly Jared. I'll bet it works well.

Cool looking fly! To get a similar effect as your floss body covered in pearl try experimenting with various colors of Krystal Flash. I think you'll like the results and it may allow you to have an even more slender abdomen on those soft hackles.

Until later...

After seeing it here and reading the postings, I tried a variation of this fly last nite in size 12 (for no particular reason other than those hooks were abundant).
Abdomen - Krystal Flash
Body - Green Floss
Thorax - Sparse Dubbing (your choice, I used a lt. color)
Hackle - Partridge (again, sparse)

I used Krystal Flash for the abdomen, no rib (should have in hind sight!), green floss body, and partridge hackle (sparse) They came out pretty good, I'm dying to see if they'll work! My body abdomens only go to the hook point vs. to the barb, ie more simliar to a true soft hackle trout fly. (no reason for that other than I read it in a book once...) I tied a simlar fly w/ copper wire bodies and a small dubbed thorax with partridge hackle as well. We'll see....

Is it tough to post pix of flies? Ive never done it before?

You gotta love soft hackle flies. I have never tied them with the beads before.

Nice hook.

I'd love a chance to see some of these flies!
I like the krystal flash idea, the color schemes are seemingly endless...... anyone try alternating colors yet?

jsmit- Green is personally a go to color of mine. Posting pictures really isn't that hard, digital cameras are alot easier to work with than scanning pictures. The hardest part is adjusting the image size accordingly. There are several archived posts on the subject of taking and posting pictures of flies.

pacres- I feel that adding a bead gives the soft hackle a little extra dimension as a wet fly that can represent anything from nymph to spent wing in faster moving water. As for the hook, it is a standard straight eye mustad, a good light source just adds to the overall apearence (sunny day open window and a white counter top).

Happy Tying,

soft hackle abdomen materials
The Krystal Flash works well and provides a lot of color/flash but, to be honest, it's not very durable. As a result, very fine wire counter-wrapped or head cement will keep it together longer. My normal routine for tying with KF is to tie it in at the thorax, wrap it down to the bend, coat the wraps with head cement, then wrap over the previos wraps (now saturated with cement) back to the tie-in point. It is about as bullet-proof as it can be made.

As for other body materials, I really like using the traditional old Pearsall's silk as it ties so nicely and keeps the bodies very slim. Lately I have also been tinkering with DMC floss. It is mercerized cotton embroidery floss available in about 350+ colors and is really, really inexpensive (about $0.24/skein). It darkens up like silk and lends itself nicely to weaving.

More later...

I was definatly inspired by your tie. I tied up some similar in a range of colours, but ommitted the bead, instead opting to build a bit larger dubbed thorax. I used an Eagle River ER-7200 hook, which is almost identical to the c53s signature hook.

Thanks for the inspiration. I'll try to post a photo if I can.
