Fly rod handle nearly complete...
Hi all!

For anyone interested i've gotten started on my first fly rod.

this is a six weight rainshadow two piece blank 8' 6". You can see my progress on my rodblog @

i've made the images as small as possible for modem users.

would welcome any thoughts or advise.

Very, Very Cool!

The pictures are fantastic and the grip really came out nice. I love the burled cork, tougher to shape but it looks so good. Really outstanding work on the rod and the blog.

I especially like the flytalk link

Thanks Jim,

i discovered that the handle is still a bit to thick, so i'll be taking it down a little more. Of course i'll be adding about an inch of rubber cork for a butt end.

The next challenge will be guide placement; after that i can finish up and GO FISHING!

btw, i'm using a nikon coopic 5400 (its wide angle) on museum mode for low light conditions indoors and on a tripod.

That is a nice set of photos, a really nice web page and yes thatís a great looking handle.

On the handle issue. I have in the past gone into the fly shop with my callipers and measured fly rod handles that I like, then drawn a profile, and used it a guide while turning down the cork.

The last couple of grips have been similar profiles to the Full Wells that Sage puts on their rods. I like the exaggerated dip in the front end because in fits my thumb really well.

I have recently stopped using filler. I notice that after a couple of years that the cork and the filler wear differently and it just bugs me. The last rod I built I used premium cork rings, and no filler at all. I think the pits that are left in the cork add a little character. Its an experiment so we will see.
