At the show, I was given a sample of a product called "Rod Wrap". It is a ribbon of a leatherette material that you wrap around the cork on your rod. Bass guys and competition casters have been using something like this for a few years.
I was fishing in some pretty heavy surf yesterday, and I can tell you that this stuff works great. The improvement in grip over the standard cork was significant. My casting hand still smarts a few years after a motorcycle accident. A heavy rod, hours of blind casting, and a wet cork spells a hard day for me. I found that the extra grip provided by the rod wrap promoted easy hands and a relaxed cast.
Gripes? Well, compared to cork, this stuff is pretty ugly. It is not very thick, but if you have small hands and a big grip (Thomas+Thomas) it could be uncomfortable. The size small is not enough to wrap a full wells grip.
I think that this stuff would be useful any time your hands are wet. Northeast beaches and northwest steelhead streams come to mind. If Rod Wrap still works combined with a little sunblock, it would be nothing short of a miracle. Costs a few bucks and I think that Rod Wrap is one of the best bangs for the buck in fishing.
