I enjoy the mobility and the sense of being part of my surroundings...
If you are thinking about buying a kayak (yak) you might consider investing in a good paddle AND a spray skirt.
The paddle speaks for itself but when you find yourself in big water (standing waves from current/wind/wakes) a spray skirt will keep the water on the outside where it belongs. Mini skirts are better than nothing but a full skirt will keep the floor from turning into a wading pool...
Also, get "comfortable" BEFORE you venture out where "interesting" conditions make you wet your pants!

Good points Pete.

I was fortunate enough during the EMS 20% sale to find a composite paddle which definitely made a difference for me last weekend.

I also grabbed a 1/2 skirt which came in very handy when paddling against the wind in boat traffic.

I would strongly urge anyone who buys a full skirt to learn how to complete a wet exit (upside down) or learn to roll. I've done a bit of whitewater kayaking and it's amazing how disoriented you can become when you're upside down and feel trapped. I've seen several people panic.

I'm in the process right now of scheduling a winter pool session with some AMC kayak experts to cover the safety basics that we all need to know; wet exit, rolling, wet entry, etc...

Ah....would Ishmeal know if I can get a sand eel cooler for my Yak... by that I mean a small cooler with convient placement for quick grabs as I Yak. Thanks for your help.

JOHN.......I've missed your good company!
As far as a cooler option goes, true scavengers, such as myself, continually feed and fresh dead bait is consumed immediately to maximize freshness, maintain high energy, and insure an appropriate level of Omega-3 fatty oil for a shiny coat.
If you must choose a cooler option, I recommend a "soft side" so when you are "going inverted", the chances of blunt trauma to the noggin are reduced...
...and all this time I thought a wet exit was what happened when I climbed out of the tub?! GO FIGURE?!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
