Cuzan details...

For those few of you who stayed at Cuzan, did you DIY or did you do the whole guided package?

I was hoping to just stay in they huts on the cheap and wade/surf fish for a week. Any thoughts? Possible?

If you just want a place to stay go past Cuzan 200ft or so and there are two places run by Americans that have cheaper lodging. It has been a few years since I was there, but at the time both places also could arrange guides for you a lot cheaper. Their guides are not the best, but they know where the fish are hiding. My fishing buddy and I paid $140 for a full day fishing and $15each a night for a room with a private bath and 2 beds. If you want to DIY just go negotiate with the fisherman. All of them know where to get you fish.

Fly into cancun and get a car to Punta Allen??? For these other place "run by americans," should I worry about reservations or is it just super-low-key?

Any contact info for these places?

Can't thank you enough!

Punta Allen

You will have to rent a car and drive down to Punta Allen. The flats are not within wading distance if you want to wade the flats. However, you can walk up and down the beach fish from the beach all you want. I have done this and it can be successful. (Read my Ascension Bay fishing report)located in this forum.

I don't know of the "American Place" to stay that was mentioned so I can't reply to this. The whole area is very low key as you say.

Have a great trip and hope to hear how you did.

Happy holidays,

PS: I forgot to mention---GO STEELERS!! I saw you were from Pittsburgh, I hope your a Steeler fan

Darn Right
Yeah, go steelers!

Can the rental car be of the "economy" sort...? The stuff I've read makes it seem like I'll need a hummer to get to Punta Allen. fish the flats, I gotta pay the $350/day guide???

Thanks to all for the help. Hope this info helps others, too.

Punta Allen

You can rent an economy car, I have seen them many times but you really need to take it slow and watch out for rocks so you don't take off the oil pan. I have driven an economy car down there before. I will also mention this, there are times I've seen the road underwater and an economy car would not make it to Punta Allen. I was in a van and it made it down but saw an economy car stuck in the middle of the road bogged down from taking in water.

Yes you will need a boat and guide to reach the flats. Whether you pay 200-300+ plus is up to you. I have only fished with guides from the lodge I'm staying at. I have heard of people finding guides once they get to Punta Allen for less money but that it can be a crap shoot. You have to take some chances when doing it this way. I have heard of some horror stories from (my neighbor) and other postings on the internet. Problems like the guide didn't show up, showed up late, showed up hungover, came back early, no cold drinks onboard etc. I guess it can be one of those "you get what you pay for" deals. Good luck to you. Would like to hear how it went when you get back.

Have a good day,

Rock on man! Thanks for your assistance. I'll post my findings.

My Atlantis and a recent cane rod creation of mine will be making the trip!
