knots in the leader and tippet
I am a beginer and have a St. Croix 9 ft 5wt and I always get little knots in my line doing a roll cast (or at least I think that's what it's called), is this normal.

Tough one.... roll cast is used when you don't have enough space at the back to make a normal cast and in other special situations, is that what you're talking about? Please elaborate.

Knots are -> always <- caused by the leader crossing over itself. The way to prevent them is to make sure that this doesn't happen, generally by being patient. In a roll cast, pause at the top, then proceed with the cast. It helps to slant the rod off vertical slightly.

mabey i'm not doing a roll cast. I just swing over my head from 10:00 to 2:00. I can't cast farther than about 40 ft.

It sounds to me like a case of the wind knots, these knots aren't necessarily caused from wind, but more in terms of trying to put too much power in your cast. Try to keep the acceleration of the rod gradual applying the main "pop" to the cast right before you stop the fore and back cast motion, and also try stopping your back cast closer to the 12 o'clock position and not the 2.

Hope this helps...
