Beginners help

I bought a very basic beginners combo at Bass Pro. 8 1/2 foot 5 weight.

I am fishing a small lake and can only seem to cast about 40 feet +/- I consider myself reasonably proficient but still learning/practicing.

Should i invest in a stiffer rod, heaver weight line, longer rod...or just keep practicing?

Thanks for the help.

Forty-foot casts aren't bad for a beginner. With practice, and a weight-forward line, in time you'll probably be casting twice that far. You didn't mention what you're fishing for, or if you have a boat/tube, or are bank-bound. A 5-weight is fine for trout and panfish, and a lot of bass; a 7- or 8-weight outfit would be better for sizeable bass, and give you 5-10 feet more casting distance.

Sorry that nobody answered you till now. We're all very busy at this time of year. :o
