Belated Sekiu Report
I fished Sekiu last week with a couple of good freinds. The coho was fishing was terribly slow, however, we did manage to tie into some rod corking, drag testing big mackerel that provided a great sport...especially considering the coho fishing was sooooo slow. We couldn't even buy a fish bucktailing.
An observation with a question. For the first time, I had the oppurtunity to fish a Rio Deep 7 alongside a sinktip with an intermediate running line (new Cortland 555 QD 350 gr 30' tip). I have fished both (and had decent luck with both) but I have never had the oppurtunity to fish each side by side for a couple of days.
The Deep 7s, hands down, out fished my 555 QD eventhough we are all fishing similar flies. I think if I went to a 450 or 550 I could of matched the Deep 7's success but the Deep 7 is such a more pleasureable line to cast and fish. Any thoughts?
Looks like you still had a great time. Do you or anyone for that matter know how far in the straits these mackerel will come? Anyone know what they taste like? Also do they migrate with the cold weather coming?
the mackerel are out in the ocean every year. i rarely see them even at the entrance to the strait (thank god!!!!!). i see tons of them every year offshore. catch enough of them and you'll know right away when you have one on (first hint, no headshakes... just a constant pressure).
when you are sure you have a mackerel... try this: grab your flyline and hold it with your hand.... you will notice the fish cannot pull your arm.... a great lesson in how a fish can pull really hard at the end of a rod.... but literally cannot break you off with a direct connection.
some people think they taste good... i personally don't. they make great blue shark chum though.... and if you like them there's no limit so you can fill 1,000 freezers.
There are also jack mackerel in addition to these horse mackerel, and some boats are getting true albacore way the heck out there (50 miles). We'd run into these macs every time out at Swiftsure Bank.
Somewhere I have a video of the krill being compressed by a wave of macs, then when the krill get pushed into a big wave the coho come jumping over the backs of the macs like extra point blockers on the gridiron gulping mouthfuls of krill. A well placed deceiver gets a hard grab from these fish with consistency, just have to strip it away from the macs.
I sure miss fishing in the potpurri out there!

What was the fly du jour?
I talked to a gent at the Marina that mentioned that one Fall, 4 or 5 years ago, they filled the Straight and he would actually go target the mackerel with his 6 or 7 weight because they do provide great sport.
Regarding their table fare, Iíve heard both good and bad. Iíve heard they are good. Iíve heard they bad. That same gent I talked to, told us that the bigger mackís actually tasted great. We killed and cleaned the fish in anticipation of eating them, but I just couldnít eat a fish that ugly!
Green and white clouser. They didn't care too much for our fancy stuff.
