Borgie?

Has anyone fished the Borgie this spring? I'll be in Scotland in a few weeks and have a few days to fish that river. Just wondering if anyone knows how the fishing has been so far?

Also . . . is there any place to fish for Pike in the Northwest highlands (we'll be staying in Ullapool and then Borgie)? I'll be bringing trout and salmon gear, but I'm wondering if it's worth packing a few wire leaders and Pike flies too.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,
Strangely or spookily I was reading about the Borgie last night. John Ashley-Cooper was not very complimentry about it. He prefered the near neighbour, the Naver, I can see his point of view.

I take it you have seen http://www.riverborgie.co.uk/

There are few pike in Northern Scotland, probabvly due to the icemelt from the last ice age. The theory being that the pike coming from the southern rivers did not have a link the way the ice melted, the pike that are there have been introduced. IMHO the game fish more than make up for the lack of pike.

Prey for rain.

Very strange coincidence indeed! I fished the Borgie one day last year, so I am familiar with it. I haven't seen the Naver, but from everything I've heard, Mr. Ashley-Cooper is right that the Borgie isn't quite the caliber of the Naver. But then again, it's a lot more affordable and still quite enjoyable for a beginning salmon angler like me. We really enjoyed staying at the Borgie Lodge Hotel too . . . very friendly people . . .even got invited to the local trout fishing contest at Loch Loyal, which was great fun! We're looking forward to coming back this year.

Soloflyfisher,

I am almost exclusively a fly fisherman for Salmon and Sea Trout. However, I do occassionally foray into other types of fishing, and have an interest in all things to do with our sport.
I am sure there will be very good pike fishing within a reasonable driving distance from the Borgie. There are quite a few lochs that contain pike in the north of Scotland, and many of them hold very large specimens.
If you do a search on the web, I'm sure you will find some information(sutherland, pike, fishing, scotland, highlands, etc.).

Thanks Gary . . . I will search the web for options.

Like you, I prefer fishing for trout and salmon, but every once in a while catching a pike on a fly can be a great deal of fun too.
