Simple slider (swap entry)
My deer hair swap flies have been done for awhile, but it's time to get them into the archive...
Hook: Mustad 3366, size 2/0
Thread: Yellow, 3/0
Tail support: Chartruese bucktail
Tail flash: 4 strands each of copper and peacock krystal flash
Tail: One matched pair each of yellow hackle and chartruese grizzly hackle
Collar: Spun yellow deer hair
Head: Spun and trimmed yellow deer hair
This fly seems to fish better when it gets a bit water logged and rides an inch or two under the surface. It still pushes a wake and the strikes are still very visual, but for whatever reason in my experience it fishes better "wet". For that reason, I don't treat it to float (but your mileage may vary).
Cool -- can't wait to test it!
If my memory is correct (I didn't search the archives), you posted a recipe for a similar fly with an olive and yellow head?
You might be thinking of the perch slider. That one is very similar, and has alternating bands of yellow and green deer hair.
