Puget Sound Herring population in trouble
Saw an article in the local newspaper on Thursday about the Northern Puget sound Herring population being very depressed. In fact, it was reported to be in serious trouble. Therefore WDFW has closed portions of the sound to fishing to allow the herring to "rebound".
I remember the concern over these herring getting put on the table the last two years and WDFW "determined" those time that although the herring were lower in number than expected, there was no reason to close fishing at that time. Now it is being reported that the numbers are so low that it is a critical situation.
The commercial bottom fishery will be closed now to protect these "very depressed" herring. Wonder if the herring crash and the commercial bottom fishing are related?
can you help shed light on this?
