Maybe some marabou (purple)

I was a bit skeptical at first about the marabou on a spey fly. But since everyone else is using it I thought I would give it a try as well. Looks like it should seduce a steelhead.
I think I might even take it for a swim.

Nicely done adaptation of Gobin's Purple Spey.

The only thing you will find with marabou hackled speys is in faster water, the marabou collapses around the body. That is why marabou spiders are tied with a dubbing ball or ball of chenile at the shoulder, the ball keeps the marabou from collapsing against the body. Unfortunately, you cannot tie the exaggerated shoulder on a spey fly without disturbing the wing set.

However, in slow water, a marabou hackled spey works very well.

Gobin's Purple Spey

Flytyer:

Thanks for the comment. You bring up an interesting point. You know I have never herd of Gobin or his “Purple Spey”. As I see it this as a generic pattern, and this particular combination of materials fell out of the creative ether (what ever I felt like tying at the moment with the materials I had on hand).

Good ideas have kind of an evolutionary nature sooner or later someone will come up with it, and more than likely more than one will occur independently of the others. And then again it may be advantageous to mimic a successful strategy eh.
