Lighting on the flats...

If you're a wading fisherman and concerned about lighting (as you should be), pick up one of those really cheap little AM radios and put it into your pack, the smaller the better. Radio shack has little tiny earphone radios for a few bucks. Anyway...

If the sky looks like it might bring some jolts and bolts, turn on the radio between channels and listen for lightning. You can hear a scratchy and loud interference when lightning is nowhere in sight, I am sure 25 miles away or more.

The same works when you are scouting along the shore by car. Earlier this year I pulled up at Saint's Landing in Brewster on Cape Cod with a perfect tide but an iffy sky. The walk across the flats is over 7/10ths of a mile and mostly water on the return. I turned on the AM and >SCRATCH!< Decided to forgoe the walk. Good thing too, soon the sky was breaking open with electricity.

Works for me!
