Method for removing epoxied reel seat butt cap?
Can anyboddy recommend a method for removing an epoxied butt cap from a reel seat.
I tried putting the butt end of the seat in boiling water, but had no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Assuming this is for the butt cap of a fly rod...And that the butt cap is either Nickel Silvler or Anodized aluminum...Not plastic.
You should be able to apply direct heat at the butt cap/ reel seat intersection with a butane cigarette lighter or alcohol lamp for a very few moments...Do not over do it, and rotate the butt as you heat.
This will oxidize the epoxy directly at this point and allow you to easily lever off the butt cap with a dull knife. It may take a couple of attempts.
If done carefully, you will not effect the rest of the reel seat /blank bond, nor harm the blank.
Boiling water can soften the whole epoxy bond at the reel seat to blank area...Or worse...Some blank resins will liquify at the boiling point of water, so caution should be taken when doing this.
Mail me if you wish.
Thanks Bob, this method worked great!
It was an aluminum fly reel seat that wasn't mounted on a blank; thankfully, after my first attempt with boiling water:eyecrazy: Thanks for that heads up also Bob.
The very butt of the seat got a little marred from the levering but I think it will be mostly masked by the epoxying of the fitting butt.
Good on ya Tom.....
Tight lines...B. Meiser
