Patagonia Eco Challenge

For those of you who might be interested in seeing the sights of Patagonia, the Discovery channel is showing the last part of the Eco Challenge tonight at 21:30 est. The Eco challenge is an adventure sport competition that takes place in breathtaking places, and in 1999 it occurred in Patagonia.

Interestingly, part of the original course for the competition included kayaking down the famous and short Correntoso river, continuing the race through Nahuel Huapi Lake. The waters of this short and shallow river are the spawning grounds for the massive browns and rainbows that inhabit the lake, and additionally local regulations prohibit its navigation. A group of fly fishers from the south american based listserv flycast@ got together and inundated the mailboxes of the Eco Challenge organizers as well as the Discovery Channel. The result was that organizers altered this part of the course and the Correntoso was never kayaked.

Here's an image of the river
