Energy Bill Hydro Stuff Dull But Important
The following is from American Rivers regarding pending language in the Federal Energy Bill. If you have the time, take the time to write your senator yourself or through American Rivers electronic letter. Link below.
Oppose Ill-conceived Hydropower Language
Urge your Senator to oppose the existing hydropower section (Section 511) of the Energy Bill, and in its place, to support an environmental amendment offered by Senator Bingaman. PLEASE ACT TODAY! The Energy Bill has already been passed by the House of Representatives and the bill is scheduled for a Senate vote next week.
At a time when our leaders should be focused on meaningful energy reform, the hydropower language in the Energy Bill is little more than an industry giveaway. The bill would give the industry priority above all other stakeholders – including states, Indian tribes, landowners and the public – and roll back environmental protections that have been in place for more than 80 years!
Worse, the language is ill-timed. The Bush Administration, through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), has already begun a promising rule change to improve the hydropower licensing process. This bill would undercut collaborative efforts already being undertaken by the agencies involved in the licensing process.
Please tell your Senator to substitute the ill-conceived hydropower section of the energy bill with an amendment to ensure a fair, efficient, and environmentally friendly process.
