I don't want to sound trite, but, it's called match the hatch, as a preferred approach on still waters.
When that is not possible, then searching patterns come out first, like a swimming nymph, caddis or mayfly imitation, followed by perenials like a leech, and when all else fails, a wet-dry or sunken wet will usually produce.
Fly selection varies based on your prior scouting of the type of bugs likely to hang about the lake you are visiting. If you have not done any scouting, you can usually bet that there are mayflies of some sort, very likely caddis at some stage of life, leeches, and if there are cat-tails or similar reeds, bet on dragonflies and damsels being about.

the only still water trout pond that i have had a chance to fish is a spring fed pond so far i have caught fish on BHGRHE , griffith's gnat PT olive scud and have a had a few hits on midge patterns but not many
haven't used any streamers as of yet
i have seen PMDs and BWOs flying around on a few occasions

i ahve come up w/ a simple midge patern for still water
curved cadis hook
brass wire body peacock thorax and some white antron in the front for gills
works well at a trout pond that i go to alot andthe browns there are picky and have hooked up w/ two so far

That pattern sounds like a small sized metallic caddis pattern. It works very well for me in these parts (when I get myself to actually do some trout fishing).

it is basically a brassie w/ white antron in the front
