Palm Beach, FL report

Just got back from 5 days in sunny, hot Florida. Nice to get away from our cold winter.

Managed a day of fishing with Scott Hamilton out of WPB, which was a real treat. The day started blustery, overcast with a little drizzle, and that limited where we could fish, with a change of plans from king-mackeral to bluefish in the morning. Caught lots of fish mostly in the 5-7lb range. No surface blitzes, but these fish would fight each other to get to a surface teaser, and a hook-up was a foregone conclusion if you dropped thefly anywhere near the teaser. When the weather allowed you to see the school, you could also cast into them, with hook-ups almost instant. Also caught some small jacks, but did not see the big schools of the big boys that we encountered last year.

Kept a couple blues to use for the afternoon sharks. who showed up in numbers within minutes of setting them out. We had roughly 10 hook-ups with 4 sharks landed in roughly 3 hours of targeting them. these were spinner sharks in the 45-75lb range. Hook-up was foolowed by initial run of 200-300yards, punctuated by 2-4 jumps (complete with spins) followed by 20 minute slugfests to get the fish to the boat.

Did manage to break my 12-wt (high-sticking at the boat...oops)...built on an elkhorn blank...I don't think they will replace it, which raises a question. What's the best way to get the reel-seat off the blank to use on a replacement blank? Any way to "melt" the epoxy?

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for the report Mark and sounds like you had a great time... I personally loved catching Jacks as they are great fighters and make a great game fish and are plentiful in the right spots.
