Midge Swap- Halo Mayfly Emerger
Here is my Midge swap entry.
Originator: Gary LaFontaine
as published in his book "Trout Flies-Proven Patterns", page 124
also in "Mayflies- An Anglers study of Trout Water Ephemeroptera" page 219
(both books are a must get book for trout fishers)
Hook: Dry Fly #10 to 24 (these are #18)
Tag: Clear Antron (I used clear/white)
Tail: Marabou fibers
Abdomen: Synthetic Dubbing (I used olive Antron)
Halo: The two small bubbles on either side at the head, made from closed cell foam (tie in a piece of foam in figure 8 wraps, fold each side over and form a bubble on each side)
Thorax: Same as abdomen, but tied larger, I figure 8 around the Halo as well as building bulk behind the halo
Spike: Orange deer hair
Tip for tying: I started the fly by forming the halo first and then building the fly from the rear to the front rather than tying the halo after the abdomen was done. On size 18 hooks, this worked best for me.
