"Speydicator" fishing

Brought the big stick (14 footer) out today and fished one of the "larger" rivers. 6 for 6 in a whopping two hours time. Must have been at the right place at the right time today. First three fish came in the first 10 casts. Best day yet this fall/winter. Fish were a mix of fresh to dark and all in the 6lb-9lb range and they all were caught on the same fly (which doesn't look so nice anymore). The big spey sure makes it easy to fish a lot of water on a big river. Also, the guides don't freeze up as much when you are doing the good old double spey because you don't have to strip line in all the time. For the most part, fishing seems to be real hit or miss, fished all day yesterday with only a lake run brown and a brief steelhead battle to show for it. Tight Lines!

fishing...

Yeah I have been doing a little bit of fishing here and there.

On average I am hooking 1 steelhead per day for the most part, with some days a few more. I have landed a fair amount so far this year. All from my local tributary that gets a decent run, but nothing spectacular. This fall was better than last year due to good amounts of precipitation and decently mild fall. Winter has set in over here, but there are fish in the system due to the rain we got less than a week ago. Should keep good stable flows and water color all winter since the ground is frozen now. I predict a good winter run and Michigan's streams should fish well. Lets just hope the fish continue to trickle in.

I usually fish eggs/nymphs under an indicator with shot with a longer single hand rod or swtich rod. Best technique for steelhead in the wood and many hookups. I haven't brought the 12'6" 6wt spey rod out yet, it will be out this winter for sure.

I will post pictures later.

is there water in the river?

last weekend the fishing really shut down. thanksgiving was real good. we cut the x-mas tree today and i had other household things to do. i'll try tomorrow. morning temps are expected to be around 15-20. hopefully no wind.

last year i fished a day when the wind chill was below 0. it was like dipping a candle. every cast formed a new layer of ice on my leader and line. i looked at my caddis fly and it was encased in ice. a flycicle. didn't catch anything.

Been out lately???

Don't rub it in -- two new rods and I all can do is give my lines some grass stains.

Been out lately

Any brave souls been testing our icy waters lately?

We just had a mini-cold snap that more than likely put the fish in a nasty funk.

Also have any of you tried your fly gear in the many warm water discharges we have? It may be a new avenue yet to explore.

One close to me comes to mind, the current is so fast that chuck-n-duck (insert shudder here) may be the only way to get your offering down.
