RE:Weekend plans

The south side, albeit also prone to bait being pushed out by a north wind, has a lot of fish passing thru this time of year. The drill over the years has been lots of schoolies with legals mixed in (as opposed to summer when the legals are usually missing). By this I mean Hardings to Herring to Parker's to Criagville, etc. Like everywhere else, hit or miss. I plan to seek fish on this last outing as necessary. I would note the high numbers of fish up inside the darker bottomed fingers of the Bass River during cool seasons - not necessarily small bass either. I hit my first 30+ incher the weekend after the spring clave in one of these little spots, wind was fairly easy to deal with up there.

Rockpile at the light should be do-able despite a strong wind, hooked my biggest fish of the season there on a flood rip... especially the inside corner at the base of the high breakwater.

The refuge is very fishable on a north wind, flat calm by the time one makes the bend toward Stage due to high banks. I love that area, did some damage there this year already. I think I just convinced myself on one locale to target.

There is usually a strong November push of bass on the bayside too but with this wind... the flats would be out but Chapin on the start of the ebb has been incredible for me in early Nov last two years.

Westport is another unique locale we need to incorporate into our late season sorties. I've had good trips and quiet ones in Nov down there... but the breakfast is always stellar at that diner on the east side. Not this year.

BBay, inlets should be sheltered and productive during off hours or with a skiff - too far from the angler's club for me this time.

Well, for me it's a celebrative event and Chatham has been the mecca for me this year. Despite possibly adverse conditions, I want to ring the year out in homage to the area. Sipping scotch and tokin' a stogie with the gang and fishing daybreak somewhere in the area. A Monomoy espresso, a fresh beefsteak tomato slice on a toasted bagel with roasted red-pepper cream cheese for breakfast, then fish a little more. Then at some point thru the day a load of Monomoy steamers and a beer to toast the very best SWFF season so far for me, and I suspect a lot of other folks on this board!

RE:Weekend plans

John, I'll stop by the house to see what you're plans are.

Brian, it's really hit or miss this time of year. The north wind really pushed things off shore last time out in RI, so the Cape might be a better bet. I'll be bopping around with Ray Stachelek and GregO. Email me if you need my cell phone number. If NOAA is right (they have been known to be wrong this far out), we'll most likely all be at Hardings or some other sheltered spot in Pleasant Bay.

Anyone have a good set of directions for the area?

RE:Weekend plans

Al, I would be game for the Light or Hardings... But if your thinking of Hardings at 10 am that might work for me. I also am bringing down my 3 wt. in case I decide on some local ponds. Sorry you can't stop by Friday eve but I will look for you at the light house in the early morn... if your there.. if you do not see me drop by before you go to Hardings, I may very well be at the house depending on how much cleaning up I do Friday during the day. I mentioed to Juro that any of the guys are welcome to drop by Friday eve if they want.. he may be e-mailing you or others anyway with directions but I think you probably remember the location. This would be an informal get together since I know Juro will spend the night and Roop was thinking the same.

RE:Weekend plans

Al, as much as I'd love to end the season at the lighthouse the NOAA forecast sounds like 20-25kts from the North most of the weekend. You might be on to something with Hardings/Stage Harbor.

RE:Weekend plans

Hey guys,
I thought I was calling it quits after the Rhody-fest for the year. However, listening to you chat, squeezing out one more day doesn't sound that bad.
What are your thoughts on the beaches of R.I. (i.e.-Napatree, etc.), vs. Chatham. It's an equal ride (if not closer) from Boston to R.I. than Chatham. With the weather being so awful last w/e and listening to Quentin's report of Sat. a.m. in R.I., I'm up in the air?
Any Thoughts?

RE:Weekend plans

Thanks Juro. I'd like to fish with you too, anxious chat and all

John, I think that fly you gave me last time was the inspiration for a new pattern for me. Hope I get a chance to show it to you. Hardings sounds good. You in?

RE:Weekend plans

I will have strong coffee and expresso, etc. Saturday morning for anyone who wants to stop by..before they go out to any Chatham location or whatever. If anyone is going to Hardings, I am not far. Will have coffee going well before light.

RE:Weekend plans

No announcement per se, just more anxious chat as usual. I could pass on the steamers and do the rocks at dusk. I'd really like to close out the season with one of it's main contributors... I'm sure I speak for the whole readership when I say thanks for everything you've done.

Anyone else?

RE:Weekend plans

Yes, Sat. at the rock piles an hour before dusk and prior to that various outer beaches.

I won't be able to make it Friday evening as we went ahead and made plans for that night. I guess I missed the Friday announcement. Oh well. Lift one for me. Perhaps I'll see you at Squires.

RE:Weekend plans

Al - as you probably read in John's / Roop's / Nick's other posts over the last week or so there is a consipracy to hold a scotch tasting and flyfishing Chatham Angling Club meeting at the big girl bar Friday PM / Sat AM. Any chance of getting down there Fri PM?

I am most likely going to head down Fri PM to the Chatham Angler's Club and fish hard Sat AM. I would like to end the day with a Squires Monomoy steamer plate and a brewsky, sip a little of the broth to end with the ocean taste in my mouth as I hang the gaitors up for the year and head home Saturday night. We'll see if that works out as planned, nothing's ever certain in my schedule.

Are you heading up the beach in the AM and hitting the light at night?

Weekend plans

Well, the last hurrah is upon us. After this weekend, I'm hanging up my saltwater gear for the season and knuckling down at the vise, among other things.

I plan on being on the Cape Saturday mid morning and fishing right through to sunset (maybe a little beyond that) at various locales. Nauset is high on the list, but so is Ballston, Head of the Meadow, and possibly the Race. The only thing I know for certain is that I'd like to be at the Chatham lighthouse close to dusk.

Last year, we kissed the season goodbye at Race Point under a spectacular sunset. This year, I feel it's only fitting that we do the same at the light.

Who's in?
