What a GREAT Idea!!

You're a genius Juro!!

We'll put the little blue balls back about 3/4 of the way on the tube, then add a little tuft of black (or maybe purple) maribou and some krystal flash behind that. Then we heat up a needle and create 3 - 4 holes down each side of the frontal projection of the plastic tube so that you can run the leader out either side to further wake the fly. Hell - that front tube should act just like a rudder (art imitating life)!

Anyway . . .what to name it??? If the original was the Booby, perhaps the Bobby? Or just the blue-ball waker? I gotta tie at least one of these for Tyler so he'll have a Politically Correct flybox!

sorry for that ~twisted~ detour <g>, but it just might work!

RE:Steely Fly Swap

Booby on a tubie? Geez, if you extended the tube out the front you'd have to call it something else... perhaps the gender bender?

Seriously, we had a couple posts a while back from someone in the UK about the effectiveness of this fly. I think it might have been Steve Skidmore? I am anxious to see it.

As far as your black GP... the one in my steelhead box defies your modesty! The fish on the homepage you're holding defies that too.

This is going to be a great swap. Many thanks for your participation and for anyone else - it's not too late!

BTW - Ryan, as you said yourself "it's not just the fish - it's the culture". Well, I can say "it's not just the fly, it's the person behind it". I'd be honored to receive a fly from a person like you. I have to mention how important the contribution of the WSC board is to the cause, and it's clear that your energy is an important part of that initiative.

RE:Steely Fly Swap

Hey Ryan,

Don't sweat it with how "pretty" the flies are - if they catch fish, they'll be welcomed in the swap!

I have one I'm thinking of tying for the swap that Kush and BlackSalmon lovingly refer to as Stink Fly - it doesn't look like much till you put it in the water. Disgustingly easy to tie. Juro's got a picture of it in one of his steelhead stories.

I much prefer individualistic and unique flies that I've never seen before anyway-perfectly tied examples of known patters like the Winters Hope or Skykomish Sunrise I can see at Teds or any of the local flyshops.

Hey Kush . . . are you tying that Booby on a tube yet - that's the one I want to see!

RE:Steely Fly Swap

I sit here tonight at about 100 in the morning or so realizing the relative hidiousness (sp?) of my flies.
They will not compare to the years of experiance and the beautiful spey flies that will be coming your way.
I catch a large amount of my fish on simple marabou speys but everyone has those so I am tying my origonal ties...well just the ones that catch fish.
I apologize now for their relative simplicity.

Juro,

I don't know... My flies are a secret! NOBODY has ever heard of a Black GP before, okay count me in, its time that my favourite "Boobies" see the light of day.

RE:Steely Fly Swap

Hey, count me in too. I'll cook up my half dozen and send 'em in soon. It'll be just like Christmas with all those new patterns coming back.

RE:Steely Fly Swap

Awesome! Great to have you both on board.

Ryan, it's a pleasure to have you in the swap. I might comment that because some rivers prohibit the use of weighted flies, this might be a good time to pick up a classic wet fly pattern or two from your skilled cohorts after the WSC meetings. In any case, feel welcome to contribute anything you can, I am just offering a comment and your flies are just as welcome as any.

Phil, anything that can get oot the troot in Scotland should fare well in the states. Perhaps a wee splash of Macallan would keep the moths from eating the feathers in transit

Looking forward to it,

Juro

Can I join in from this side of the Atlantic? Steelheads are kinda thin on the ground here.....and even rarer in the water, but I could send over 6 of the flies we use for Rainbows in the lochs and reservoirs.

RE:Steely Fly Swap

Do 'flies' tied on jig hooks with a x-large lead eyes count??? Even if they do not, you can count me in!!

RE:Steely Fly Swap

SWAP UPDATE:

I'd like to accomodate those who would prefer the 'tween time after spring natives and before the summer run - but that would be May. Let's do it sooner than that - how about *before* the spring fishery gets hot and heavy, like February 28th - a good two months down the road.

Please send those flies in to me by Feb 28th and I'll mail out so people will have them to try during the spring fishery. I'll set up a mail list based on the entrants and if you know anyone else with a hot pattern or two please invite them!

It's customary to include a recipe with your flies. Please let me know if you'd like the recipes kept in confidence (as in NOT posted to the internet) and I will only forward to the recipient. At least one should be post-able, they can't all be that hot

Altoid cans are good containers, inside a padded envelope, etc. An audio cassette case in a cassette mailer (avail at mailboxes) is another good option. If you send a flybox I will send it back with the flies you get.

You can tie 6 of the same -or- mix 'em up, no matter.

Enrollment is open thru February, so if you haven't already signed up please do!

Thanks and I will get the mail list started.

regards,

RE:Steely Fly Swap

i'm feeling a bit like a fish that was cast to and caught - juro just reeled me in via email
i've been busier than the proverbial bunny but unfortunately not having as much fun as him. I'm so far behind in everything, including getting out to fish, that i'll have to cast my vote for the 'tween time, but if it ain't so, i'll try my best.

hey brian - how's the shoulder coming along?
