You wild man - looks like quite the trek. You could've jumped off the Oso bridge to cool off afterwards... unless you saw those summer run monsters loafing in the eddy. I'll definitely be hitting the Stilly this fall!

RE:Multimedia coming soon...

Nice video of Whitehorse from Darrington. I climbed that thing when I was young and foolish.

> 175K ?????

That's pretty amazing! I was lucky to get 3K at home on the modem. I made 24 clips and only had time to upload a few due to modem speed! Wonder when technology will make it to my home town, we have no high speed options.

BTW - Steve we should be on Walden or something with this weather!

Oops. Fixed it. The clip- of Brian took 12 seconds to load and maxed-out at 175k/sec on my Macintosh G-4/T-1

The firewall in my offcie doesn't appear to allow me to access view these. I'll check it at home via my DSL/450MgHz G-3.

Sully got me thinking...

With a little persuasion, I could get access to a "helmet cam" that a buddy of mine created for Buffet last year.

Could we use that to go live?

Awesome! I love your spirit... I've got a camcorder and a PC let's go for it!

Here's Doublespey doing well... living up to his nickname!

warning - this will take a long time for modem folks!

BTW - this is done on "very low" resolution and much better quality can be achieved... but not until I upgrade the ISP disc storage limits

Very nice footage. Although I thought I was going to see someone with a silver bullet on. All that would have been left is Sir, "Would you like first class or coach?". [img]" border="0" align="middle">

IMHO with the advent of high speed access(ie. cable,DSL,satellite & fiber)making huge inroads into the consumer market I wouldn't get too hung up on throughput quality issues. Focus on the task at hand. "Build it and they will come". <img src="[/img]

The big corporations advise you of estimated download times of large files based on 28.8Kb/s! If a web site visitors connection is that slow, well so be it. Just base this on the sampling of this post. How many people complain it's slow? Not many. So therefore the blame is not on this web sites front end!

Like I said to you before we WILL have a clave on the net this year REAL TIME. I don't care if I have to bring a generator on the beach.

Just my .02

There are three ways of viewing I;ve tried... one is the in-place plugin method, another is the MS media player, and the third is InterVU, a free player.

The in-place loads the whole clip before doing anything. The MS player tries to stream, but get's out of sync easily. the InterVU player streams so that you see things coming along until it's all there. On a real connection (vs. Modem) the latter two allow almost instant viewing like Grego says. Once they are downloaded, the play button allows viewing as it was meant to be (over and over)

I found the InterVU player to be the most pleasant to use. There are probably more out there...

Anyway, I will put up a few more choice clips in the AM. Also, look for tips and techniques with attitude in the near future.

RE:Multimedia coming soon...

OK - now that I've tested from both direct connection and modem, I'd have to say the direct experience is too good to omit on account of the modem speed problems.

All instructional and visual media clips will be "best viewed over high speed connections". Whereby some of the pages will offer "alternate modem speed media".

The Whitehorse clip is around 2meg of media, which streams well over non-modem connections. I'll keep the media size and settings around that size and duration.

Some fly-tying and/or casting instruction will be far superior when animated. Although slide show images will be provided, the media can be optionally downloaded and viewed full-speed later.

OK - the flood gates are now open!

RE:Multimedia coming soon...

Al -

Glad you chimed in... so are you telling me at your recent work with UMASS your web education media was always limited by analog lines so there is no point in lowering the quality of the media clips?

If so, the reality could be that video clips will be offered for the byte-advantaged, and the analog guys (like me from home) will be given either realmedia (blurry but small) or mpegs with frame rates that appear to be choppy slide shows. I'd be better off just doing image-based slideshows for modem users, at least jpeg's are crisp and beautiful.

You've given me much food for thought,

RE:Multimedia coming soon...

God, I love my cable modem!!! Got the Whitehorse file in about 20 seconds. Download peeked out at a transfer rate of 140K per second and still climbing when it finished.

As for 56k folks: Multi-media education over analogue phone lines has never been doable. Already been there. It's a Quixotic fight. I wouldn't spend too much time tweaking.

RE:Multimedia coming soon...

OK I've just tried viewing from home on a 56k modem...dOh!

Not acceptable, I'll be tweaking the night away

> Nice job man!
> Just one question, who is the pregnant lady with the
> hump-back in the "Elwha" video?
> Talk about a full vest!
> Roop

That's Bill, a lifelong friend and fishing maniac who just moved out to Seattle. Rumors are that the fishing had something to do with it. He's been a lurker but maybe this will get him out of the closet!
