Pat Bahan HOTDOG the ice is finally off! Fish didn't cooperate worth a hoot but MAN was it good to be back on the water! Saw quite a few bluegill in the sunny shallows today but VERY spooky. Just left my canoe at the pond so I can hit it evenings after work and not waste time. Just a few more fillets and I'll be ready for the first fresh mess of the year. Oh yeah!

Spawning gills

When the bluegills are in pre-spawn and making spawning beds, the action is unparalled for fish-per-hour results...

I actually got tired of catching fish... :eyecrazy: (like that happens a lot)
I had to take a break after I landed and released the 50th. fish...

Those rascules are an agressive lot during this time.

I use an all white nymph just under the surface film of the water and BAM, Fish on...

Quentin Some of the best bass fishing I've ever experienced occurred a few years ago during a 3 day heat wave at the end of March. The temps rose into the 70s for the first 2 days and hit the mid 80s on the third day. I fished from shore around a shallow mucky pond on the first two days, and on the third day I took the boat out to my favorite backwater spot on the Housy. I absolutely slayed the largemouths on all three days -- most of the fish were in the 1.5 to 3 pound range, and a few were at least 4 pounds or more! Bring on the warm weather!

Days are getting longer

It won't be long now before small ponds will start to thaw and warm with the increased daylight we're getting. If you live in the South or are traveling that way sometime soon, some of the best warmwater fishing of the year can be had from now until April. Bass, bluegills, and the like are poking around in the shallows and preparing to spawn, offering some great sight fishing opportunities. In New England this doesn't typically happen until late Arpril or early May, even later in northern New England.

Of course, with the winter we've had I wouldn't be surprised if this is delayed by a few weeks. But it's awfully nice to think about on a bright and cold winter day.
