Trip

I'm debating a weekend trip in the up coming weeks. Talked to a guy who lives up there last night. He said a fresh run came in on Sunday and blew up river. Supposedly there are good numbers of fish between Pineville and Altmar.

Aqua-stealths are GREAT.....

I have a pair of the LL Bean boots with these soles, and they are OUTSTANDING. No snow and ice buildup (like I got on my old studded felt soles). They are a worthwhile investment for winter fishing.

nbrandon I'll probally go try out my new hairwing swap flies tomorrow. Looks like water levels are rising steadily.

Since it's early trout season If nothin is happening, I can always head upstream and fish for trout.

removed_by_request Got a pair of the Simms aqua stealths with studs. Nice boots they grip everything iI walk on.

Makes hill climbing a breeze too.

pmflyfisher Yep, I made that mistake 15 years ago and survived a fall down a Pere Marquette steep iced over fishermans trail, did not break the rod, but skinned my hands, little blood etc.. Got up and continued right after those big wild PM fresh chromers on a cold march day. Can't remember how I did, to long ago.

Guess I am not as hard core as I used to be, maybe we should call it "prudently hard core" as we advance in age.

LOL

Be careful.

BigDave Hal - I hear you regarding the studs. I wouldn't go near the Salmon river without them on. Upper river with low water is fairly safe but trying to cross the lower river to get better drifting positions is suicide without some sort of cleats on...not to mention the shelf ice.

pmflyfisher Same out in western GLs but there are reports of some chromers being taken where there is open water. More cold is coming though in next few days and into next week. if you go watch the ice its dangerous. Wear some type of ice grippers over your felt soles, they are a life saver on those icy covered fisherman trails and the river shelf ice, etc..

waiting...

I'm just waiting for a break in the weather to go up myself. I don't have a driftboat and the idea of slogging around with waders on in knee deep snow isn't doing it for me.

As soon as we get a warm weekend I will wait until sunday night to drive up and then fish midweek to avoid the crowds. From what I understand quite a few chromers came in over the last couple of weeks when they raised the water to 700.

Steelies

I got a nice 12 Lb Chromer just below the town hole last Saturday. The action should pick up as soon as teh weather breaks. If you make the trip, be very careful of the river bank. There is alot of dangerous shelf-ice around.

Ontario and other GL areas

Has anyone been doing anything on the Steelies lately? I havent made a trip up to the Salmon River yet and I'm dying to know whats going on. Maybe willing to drive elswhere if any of you are in the "know" of some good runs. I am seriously having Steel withdrwals. I usually make 3-9 trips a year up there but due to severe cold and lack of fish as well as being busy I havent had the chance. I am looking to go somewhere real soon.
