RE:$6.00 Fly

Terry -

Jeff used straight HTML to list his gorgeous fly; so I re-posted it with braces instead of brackets or vice-versa and took out the quotes so we could see it.

Thanks Jeff -

Thought I would repost with the braces and no quotes to show the fly as it deserves to be shown...

(This board uses a funky html-like language that is a little easier in the long run over html proper. I don't write the stuff, if I did it wouldn't work at all <img src="http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif[/img] )

Also, a link to your fly database from our archive would send anxious fly-tyers to where the yak-action really is! Feel free.

RE:$6.00 Fly

I have shown several of my bb users on my website how to tie my "Buffy" series of Yak flies....Im willing to hold a small get together to spred the gospel for those who may be interested.
Also. I use two types of Yak hair...The first is marketed by several outfits, noticebaly Spirit River. The hair is great for 9-12 inch patterns but I find it too coarse to do 5-7 inch patterns. For these I use Yak that I bought from the midwest a few years back tht is not commercially available to my knowledge. It has a fine silky feel and has super translucency. Combined with the correct flash makes these flies killer in the outer surf.
I have also experiemented using Kinky Fiber. Im very impressed at the outcome and will use it alot this coming season for a good majority of my flies. Not sure if this will work but here is a Buffy tied with Kinky Fiber....enjoy....Jeff

Jeff and I had a nice off-line discussion about these flies. He offered some great advice knowing that I was poking around in the Yak Hair forest.
His version is much refined and his site has great photos. He gave me some great tips. My next version of this fly will be much better thanks to him.

Oops - my mistake. The name yakattack has already been coined by Jeff Smith (tip of the cape) for what I am sure is a killer pattern. Those guys who live on the water up there can sniff up a good fly pattern easy as low tide

I'll see if he wants to put a link to his site here. He has an epic portrayal of Tony Stetzko's world record 73# striper and the heritage of big bass on the cape on his website.

Well Pete, let's call it the yakattack - play on words Yakutak. Maybe it'll get a following out there in AK, who knows

I actually know which flybox it's in... just can't locate the box right now with stuff packed for the winter. While I was out there taking a peek as my truck warmed up I noticed I didn't deflate or bring in my inflatable river raft and noticed the pontoons are wilted... hope the internal bladders didn't give in to the frigid temps of late. Winter's tough on fishermen!

RE:$6.00 Fly-Juro's Blue Piker Wonder

Juro, Thought your fly would like to have a name, I don't call my dog DOG so I won't call your fly FLY.
I'll send it to you so you can scan it and promise to send it back. Maybe it will breed while out on the coast, you know being homesick and all...

Very nice... $6? I'll take two. Please put it in the archives! We need a good yak pattern or two or three. Nice scan too.

Pete - two crazy days, haven't been able to locate the large flybox with the other yak patterns per your request. Thanks for your patience, will get it in the archive ASAP.

Just goin for supper (22:32EST)

So here it is, needs work but not bad for first one huh?
Maybe I should dump it in the archive, but there are people who have really refined these (Jeff?)
Remember, water will slim down profile some, but the ezbody I used make a good spreader.

Yes, Concord Outfitters. It's an Orvis fly of course. Andy is a nice guy over there. I was a bit gun-shy on mentioning shop names, because of other controversies on other sites.
Glad we won't be too caught up in such things here, within reason of course. It's not my number one shop but when I need some thread or feathers midweek, there it is.

On the Yak Fly: I tried one last night. Very interesting. Upon close examination, the body was not what I expected. Some type of material like Chaneele or something with the Yak hair tied in shooting vertically out of it. SO I used what I had on hand. I will scan it tonight. Maybe at the Clave we can figure out a body method. It really is a nice class of flies.

Jeff and I have exchanged some email about cooperating. His site has the most incredible pictorial of his freind and mine Tony Stetzko. Not only does it make you drool at Big Bertha, it tells of the deep history his family has in the area of the Cape we call the outer beaches.

I'd recommend giving it a browse!

Terry,
You might want to check out Jeff Smith's site- www.flyfishsaltwaters.com/ He's got some great looking big flies there- I've got a couple of Buffys on my tying list for this week...

RE:$6.00 Fly

Did you get it over at Concord Outfitters? Hope you said hello to the staff. I recommended their guide to someone asking about Salem Harbor recently. Bob Desplaines is good freinds with the owner too.

I hope everyone feels free to mention any reputable flyfishing business on this board. We're all one big happy family in the end! This is not to say we will allow blatant advertising in FlyTalk, but to restrict mention of the names of fine purveyors of piscatorial pleasures is a bit severe.

BTW - I hope to dig up and scan my yak fly tonight. Will post the recipe for Pete and it sounds like you might be interested too.

$6.00 Fly

At noon today I darted over to that new shop that's reachable within the lunch hour. I've been trying to get the materials and skills together to tie some big flies that match the spring run herring/alewifes. So the logical result of my quest is them long yak hair patterns. But interestingly I could not find any good recipes for them. So damnit I went and bought one to use as a model. Nothing like holding one in your hand to learn from.
6 bucks. Good investment. The pattern doesn't look too hard at all. White yak below and above, blue yak hair on top, then some herl on very top. Also typical red gill, and some flash mixed in with yak hair. All on a 2/0 hook. Should be fun. I'll scan one up when I'm done.
