Try this..

Size 1/0 ( short shank hook Eagle Claw is good and if you loose some to bluefish they are cheap )

Tail: 2-4 White Saddles with Pealscent Krystal Flash ( 5-10 strands )

Body: Bills Body Braid

Collar: Flo White Bucktail ( tied in deciever style, sparce )

Under Wing: 5-10 strands of Peach or Peacock Krystal Flash ( or whatever you prefer )

Wing: Grey Bucktail

Cheek: 3 Strands of Prismatic Flash on each side ( slightly fan them out a bit )

Eyes: 1/2 inch stick on ( silver preferable or all black is cool too )

Dab a small bit of epoxy just to cover the eyes and thread.

This fly is absolutely deadly when they feed on Alewife. Has accounted for more Stripers than I can count.

Also a good little pattern for Albies. If you use it for the Albies and they refuse... cut some flash out of it and listen to the drag ZZZZZING.

striblue Fred...Veverka has a nice one...he ties it by taking flash corsair or mylar tubing and tieing it under the hook shank for a belly(you know..about 1/2 inch long after the application of the epoxy looks bigger)... I use different material than he does..but a small bunch of white bucktail tied just behind the the hook eye...but leave some room for your topping and this will create a roundish head... then on top of the buck tail pearl flashabou all around the buck tail... then another tuff of bucktail and covered by more flash... them thin bunch of violet or purple polar fiber on top of the bucktail...Then thin bunch of blue polar fiber on top of that.... veil those top toppings with more pearl flashabou....then finish off with a thin topping of black polarfiber.... Epoxy the head thinly ...moving in one direction to the back of the hook with your applicator...hold it into the shape you want which is kinda flat look... the whole head should be now be set for sticking the eyes on. red marker for gills, and second coat of epoxy to finish... remember the epoxy does not have to go the whole length of the fly ..but about no more than an inch from the hook eye back. Also... try Angel hair in the same manner... real flash and looks just like a peanut bunker... a little base of bucktail and and you have a great foundation for the angel hair.

JimW I've been using something I call the greenie

Hook: #2 Daichi 2456 or a gama
Body: pearl body braid or sliver flashabou
Thread: clear mono
  • White florofibre
  • Silver polar flash
  • polarflash
  • just a bit of chartruse florofibre on top
All tied in at the head

I think what makes this work well is when it's tied 1-1/2 to 2" long it still swims great because of the material. The polarflash really lights it up and makes it stand out.

I've also had good luck with Page Rogers' Slim Jim when the surface activity heats up.

FredA Size: small, whatever that is. I'm looking to have a few in hand in anticipation of the youngsters dropping out of a couple of local creeks in the next week or two. Plan is to tie a few peanut bunker types with white bellies with silver Polarflash blended in, olive to blue and baitfish angel hair topping - maybe a little pink and yellow in the cheeks. Thinking I'll tie a couple using EP fibers and a couple Deceiver style.

How Big?

How big are you looking for?? 2-3 inches? I fish the Hudson River and the bulk of the bait in the spring is Alewife so I tie up a pretty mean Decieverish pattern. I'll get a pic up this weekend if I still have any flies laying around. If not I'll tie one.
