OC Hey mitch,

Your episode with flats nature can get your blood going. Had it happen twice while fishing the flats on Maui. Once on a south swell had a 6 footer ride a wave in over the edge of the reef. To see it's silouette was a beautiful thing but being only 30 feet away made one stand at attention for a few minutes seeing it was about 300 feet to the beach. Never did see where it went after the wave broke. The other time was just before dark and was hoping to cast a fly to a Pepio as the tide was falling and the channel to the outside reef had good movement and plenty of bait spilling over the edge. What I got instead were 6 reef sharks all about 4 feet long that came cruising in from out side. They were swiming strait for me so I steped up on a corral head and they came right over to investigate the noise I'd made getting up on the head. They swam around me and were checking me out as I was them. Strange to have sharks looking right at you eye to eye. They left for the channel and just out of curiosity I made a splash with my foot and they came right back. Did this a couple more time with sucsess before they grew bored.
I knew they would not attacked but one still gets a rush of excitement being in such a place.

After putting all three kiddos down for a nap, I felt the need to go fishing, leaving only 8 other things to push on next week-end's schedule.
Conditions were not the best...mid-70's, light breeze, over-cast...but given the options of mowing, taxes, or bill paying, I felt I had made the right decision to spend the afternoon wading the flats. Goat fish were plentiful, but other than that, I didn't see a fish over 5 inches all day. I really didn't mind either because the main reason was to try out my new Powell AXS #8, 5-piece. I'm use to the GLX, and though the rod felt a little heavier, and a little more "sluggish" than what I am accustomed to, I must say that for a 5-piece rod, it's great.
So there I was, dumb smile on my face and all standing in calf-high water when I see something finning about 80 feet at 10 O'clock. I knew it couldn't be a shark, and I was right because after looking at moving darker patches behind it I realized that it was 3 sharks. Let me just say that if my friend Phil had been with me, I would have said "Holy Phuck Phil, I'm 150 phucking yards from shore and those are phuckin' sharks heading our way!" But since I was alone, I just did a little 'panic dance' back to shallow water, increasing my situational awareness exponentially to other inhabinants of phrindly Hawaii.
Gotta start taking my digital camera out on the water with me.
Take care all,
Mitch
