Adrian Bob you're very kind and an inspiration!

Todd, the Metz saddles are fine for the smaller patterns up to 8" - maybe a few longer feathers.

I seem to have collected a few over the years, more by accident than design since I only got interested in these patterns last year. I picked up an off-white cape recently on sale at $15 - presumably inferior quality for dry fly work. At that price I'll take all they've got!

For variety, quantity of useful feathers and length, RLS take some beating.

Tod D John,

I've been tying lots of flatwings lately - from 4" up to 15". Afterwards, I've tossed a few into the sink for simulated fishing trials. Boy, those big ones suspend beautifully.

Adrian - how have you found the Metz saddles vs. the RLS ones?

Adrian I used metz saddles and the flies came out about 7 - 8" total length.

Adrian Hackles follow the L&L recipe :

Yellow Saddle
over gold flash
over Chartreuse Saddle
over silver flash
over white saddle.

Body is pearl body braid.

The tail/support is yellow bucktail with white neck hackle over, turned up.

The collar is bucktail - white underneath, yellow sides and chartreuse top. Cheeks are three fibres each of tourquoise (sp) and flourescent fuschia blended. Thats about the only variation from the original which called for violet in the blend.

Jungle cock eyes

I took the photo under a hologen lamp with no flash. I'll play around with it a bit more to get a better reference photo.

Tod D Adrian,

Very, very nice. Tied up a few of those myself. My monitor's not giving me a great color though, did you use yellow or chartreuse (sp?) hackles?

Once I get a decent individual picture, I'll post the recipe. These are based on Kenney Abrames L&L Special.
