Lines for your loop rod

Forgot to add a couple of things (lets add confusion to the pot :hehe: ) "Doc" got you to the International Spey Casting board; from here jump to the "Spey Pages." Dana has write ups on several rod-line combinations. Suspect your Loop rod was also covered here.

One other (Rio lines only) good place for line/rod match up info is RIO's home site, then to Simon's recommendations. He covers almost any two hander ever made.

reels for under $350 CAN

I guess my spending limit is around $350 CAN.I've been looking at the Redington LA reels.I already have a 9/10 AS model and love it.I've also been combing e-bay and several flyshops for clearance items.Does anyone have a recommendation to the reel weight I should be looking for?For a rod that size I figured a 10 oz reel would be in the right range.Maybe the Redington LA(or similar) in a larger size than the 9/10 would work?Any other models people could recommend? As for the lines I would like a "change-a-tip" type of system.I already have a Cortland Multi-Tip line that I use on my single hand rod.I really like the versatility.I will also be making some heavy shooting heads as most of my fishing will be on large rivers, like the Thompson and Skeena here in BC, for large fish.

Spey Reels

Tonyd,
You don't say how much you can spend for a reel but if money is tight look at the Magnum 200 by British Fly Reel. They are smooth and tuff. Michael and Young's fly shop has them for $129.00 Canadian ($81.00 USD) and Bob Carlson in the U K has them for under $75.00 USD airmailed to the states.

As for a line, you will find a great many opinions as to style (short belly-Windcuter type or long belly Accelerator ect. type) and weight that is right for a given rod. I have a St. Croix 14ft 9/10. I am using a floating Windcutter 9/10/11 and I love it. For tips I'm using the poly sinking leaders (Airflo) in fast and extra fast and I really like them also

Loop rods and reels

Tony, be-bopp over to the International Spey Board. Under the sections on Euro rods and under reels you'll see several old threads on Loop equipment.

I'd try to be more specific but don't pick up in your question whether you were just interested in a floater, tips, etc. Huge difference in size of reel you'll need say a DT 10 wt or a 10-11-12 Rio Acclrtr.

But think you'll find your question covered in depth.

reel for a 14ft 9/10 spey rod?

I just purchased my first spey rod and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a reel and line? The rod is a Loop Adventure series(I paid $165 on E-bay).It is rated as a 9/10 and is 14ft long with a medium/fast "european" action.I need a good reel and line setup for it.I will be using it on large rivers like the Thompson,Skeena,Dean, etc for large salmon and steelhead where long casts and sinking heads are often required. Thanks for the input.
