Lake Michigan surf fishing?

Hello, I am brand new to this forum, looking for some information on Great Lakes Surf fishing, specifically Lake Michigan. I've always wanted to give it a try but find information hard to come by. I'm assuming river mouths are the place to go, but some more specifics on location would be great if anyone felt like sharing. Also wondering about tackle--best rods, lines etc. I have a 9 foot 8-weight, that is my longest/heaviest rod. Will that work or do I need to be looking at longer two-handers or "switch" rods? Floating or sinking lines?
Lastly, tactics/techniques - can it be done effectively on foot, or do I need to be in a boat? I have a pontoon and a float tube - I'd be willing to try the pontoon provided the waves weren't too crazy.

Thanks to any and all who might be able to shed a little light for me.

Bryon
