Chatham

Great morning - lots of schoolies everywhere around the refuge. Walk, find an eddy or little rip from the tide, cast, hook up, repeat. Nothing big but still a blast. Of course fog burned off @ 11:30 just as we had to leave to get back to Boston. Oh well - a great 1st day of 2012 in Chatham for me!

juro Mackerel are still at Barnstable Hbr according to sponsor Capt Art Sawayer (Fin fun charters) and big bass are on them. Kind of a fluster cluck tho, courtesy seems to be out the window there. It's a boat show there.

Still squid around on the south side but the blues are on them and coming up the coast fast, herring chasers are way up inside estuaries and we're not talking small bass there, fluke being caught commercially on Nantucket Sound and in the markets.

Blue crab still sparse to none in the usual haunts, clamming very good with steamers recovering in a lot of places from lean years.

Fishing is getting very good... jonesin' to get back out there ASAP

2012 Striper Season is seriously underway

Clouds of micro sand eels are drifting over the flats, while adult sand eels infest the sand that stays underwater longest, shooting out ahead of every footstep like miniature lightning bolts. Small stripers were gathered so thick they darkened the flats - taking the fly on every cast, but soon losing my interest - while bigger bass in the 35-40" class made their stealthy advances into the shallows on the rising tide to gulp prey to fatten and recover from the physical stress of migration from Chesapeake and Hudson drainages. The world is in bloom, and yes indeed... the 2012 striper season is well underway
