Dble Haul That rod will be overkill for both the trout and bluegill, but should be fine if you're throwing large flies for bass. I think you have the right idea to get a 3 or 4 weight to add to your arsenal for lighter applications.

Have fun.

New to the sport

I recently recieved a flyrod as a gift, and am curious as to what its capabilities are.

It is a 7-8 wt., 8 foot long rod.

I am primarily looking to use it for the local stocked trout, some smallmouth and largemouth fishing, and bluegill fishing.

Is a 7-8wt rod overkill for these species, or will it work just fine? I have considered using it for the local smallmouth, and investing in a smaller (maybe 4 wt.?) for trout, bream, and largemouth. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your input.
