Hmmm if you watch the new frodin video he does not tie these reverse any longer. Norling does but Frodin no longers sees the need. Templedog hair is so fine it does no create too large a head. Especially if you are using cone heads.
Interested in comments on stripers and albies. Can you share some patterns that have been successful for you.

Definitely, however mind the taper.......
In Tying The "FAt BAck Stlye" which is what these flies are (props to Frodin and Norling yo yo brooklyn) the taper is very important (Refering both to the actual ends of the wing material as well as the increasing legnths of the stepped or layered wing.
Using Icleandic sheep, LLAMa or other soft material it is imperative to tie it in reverse or you will have an enormous head (Unless of course you tie in and cut with a scalpel as detailed by MR Shumakov in step by step detailed on another site)
Also, what I believe you mean by doubled over is to have two simalar legnths from a single tie in.. the risk with this method is that where you cut the fur will have the "PAINTBRUSH" effect instead of the natural taper that this fly or stlye deserves.
DO some homework on Temple Dog Michael Frodin HAkan Norling PEATY MAnn Scandanavian Tube Flies etc on GOOGLE and you will find a wealth of information on this subject...some great posts on "SPEY PAGES" Too!
Enjoy... and by the way this style should not be relegated to tubes and fancy materials as simple bucktail and sheep patterns tied in this stlye on short shank hooks kill the albies and bass in the northeast

Icelandic sheep hair.
Could you double over Icelandic sheep hair for a more fuller wing or would it build the head of the fly too much?

the original was just that, dog hair. Charlie may have a source for authentic stuff. if you can't get any look for long arctic fox tail or if you want really long try the icelandic sheep which you can usualy get up to about 6" length. wapsi markets sheep under the name streamer hair.

Nice work, both of them.
Can I ask a completely ignorant kinda question. What exacly is Temple Dog? I've only seen one flavor and that was a natural black with light tips, tons of movement. But the orange in Charlies' Temple Dog looks more like fox.
If you can reveal your source send me a PM. I'm interested in making some more. I have a Mega-Picasse in mind with an Ostrich "Spey" hackle and a serious "get-down" cone head. Need some seriously long black hair for that one. Should be fun.

Neal, I just may take you up on that offer. I think my TD's are passable but there is great room for improvement.
Juro, we need to develop some color combinations for steelhead fishing for the Templedog's.

Nice and nasty! Would bring out the beast in a salar submarine for sure, thanks for the great sequence and photography.
(I think I will try a few of these on my spring steelhead trip out west as well)

Tying Temple Dog Style Tube Flies
Nice job on the tubes.
If you would like to learn more about tubes and their materials drop me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will get you in touch with my friend Toni K from Finland.
He has been tying tubes for a number of years now and because he is one of the Guideline reps he has the opportunity to tie with Hakan Norling. The original Templedog man.
